Rancho Palos Verdes

Located atop the cliffs and hills of South Bay’s Palos Verdes Peninsula, Rancho Palos Verdes is a popular suburb among affluent professionals from the Greater Los Angeles area. While it has a population of approximately 42,400, the city is still renowned for its expansive open spaces with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

History

Rancho Palos Verdes gets its name from the Spanish phrase for “ranch of green sticks.” Historians presume that this name comes from the willows that grew abundantly in the northeastern section of the city’s Machado Lake.

The city was taken from a 16,000-acre portion of the Rancho de los Palos Verdes land grant that the United States received from Mexico. In 1913, New York-based banker Frank A. Vanderlip, through a consortium of investors, purchased the land from the Bixby family.

The resulting development gave birth to the master-planned luxury communities of Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates. Rancho Palos Verdes was officially incorporated as a city in 1973, making it the youngest of the four Palos Verdes Peninsula cities.
