History

The development of Rolling Hills began in 1930 when banker and journalist Frank A. Vanderlip, owner of 12,000 acres of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, sought the help of landscape architect A.E. Hanson to design, develop, and manage the area.

Rolling Hills was born on May 14, 1936 when Declaration No. 150 was entered in the official records of Los Angeles County. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1957.

  • Portuguese Bend Forest Reserve
    A 400-acre nature preserve which features multi-use trails and plenty of opportunities for wildlife sightings, this place is part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s largest remaining patch of natural vegetation.
  • Various equestrian attractions
    As a deliberately planned and maintained semi-rural community, Rolling Hills offers almost 30 miles of bridle trails around the community. These trails are open to authorized pedestrians and permitted equestrians only, barring access to bicycles and motorcycles for safety purposes. The community also boasts two riding rings exclusive to Rolling Hills residents and their guests, namely, the Caballeros Ring and Hix Ring.
